Categories of Technology
The exam board breaks down the technologies we use into these categories. The only way to get full marks is to cover a range of technologies in your writing. In each report you should try to write about technologies from different categories, not ones that are similar to each other.
- Internet - e.g. email, www, chat rooms
- Internet technologies – e.g. modem, ISDN,ASDL, Broadband
- Communication - e.g. mobile phone, video phone, video conferencing, information points
- Entertainment - e.g. games console, MP3 player, digital TV, media station
- Control and Monitoring - e.g. burglar alarm, CCTV, GPS, central heating system
- Mobile - e.g. laptop, PDA, wi-fi
- Data Capture - e.g. digital camera, voice recorder, scanner, CCTV
- Access - e.g. touch screen, switch, concept remote controls, hearing aid, keyboard
- PC Technology - e.g. software, hardware
- Storage media – e.g. DVD, minidisk
- Financial transactions - e.g. ATM, EPOS
- Reprographics – e.g. photocopier, microfiche
Obviously the technologies listed for each category are only examples. There are many more you can add to this list and probably many more you can write about. Try to pick sensibly and remember to keep a wide range of options open to you.
